What made you choose this institution over all others? Did the university exceed your expectations?
Laurier's dual degree program was the only one that interested me as other programs were said to not have been as prestigious. I found that this program really tests your study skills and your ability to learn. There are lots of opportunities within this program, however you must be able to keep up with the workload. Overall, a very good experience that insights some challenges which will ultimately better yourself in the future.
Do you have any lingering thoughts or regrets in your year as a whole (ex; application process, mistakes going into first year). If so, describe them.
If I had to go back, I feel that I should've used the campus resources more. The assistance they provide on campus, especially the MAST department and SI sessions can be very helpful with the math programs which can be quite challenging even if you come with a previous foundation.
Briefly describe the academic rigour of your program (in terms of competitiveness, courses, professors, etc.)
This program is definitely not for those who have trouble studying. There are a lot of concepts and independent learning in some of the courses which can be very difficult. The math courses were what I found the most troubling due to some of the professors. However, that being said, in these situations you should look for campus resources to assist you as they can be VERY helpful. If your ability to understand material and independent learning is strong, I would recommend this program. If you were to enter this program without any prior knowledge of computer science and a weaker math foundation, you may find yourself having more time management problems as the workload is not considered light. But if you put the time in, you will succeed in this program. In addition to the business courses which require lots of memorization, you must be able to effectively time manage all your courses and understand the material to continue with this program.
Describe the social life at your campus based on your own experiences (making friends, clubs + extracurriculars, party culture etc.)
There are plenty of opportunities to meet new people and get involved around campus. There are many clubs that recruit first years and I would highly recommend you apply for as many as you can. Although I did not stay on Laurier res, I have heard and seen the social life thrive at Laurier. The party scene is very active with many opportunities for everyone.
What are some of the best and worst parts of your university experience so far?
The worst part would probably be having to deal with the Math courses (being specific MA122) This course is exceptionally challenging if you don't know what you're doing. Expect to be lost at some point.
Greatest part is just meeting people and having a great time at university in general. Laurier has lots to offer!
