Retail Management at Ryerson University

Charlotte (Year 2)

What made you choose this institution over all others? Did the university exceed your expectations?

Unique program located in a business hub, allowing me to combine business with design. Yes, expectations have been exceeded, school, TRSM in particular offers a lot of assistance, support and opportunities to their students.

Briefly describe the academic rigour of your program (in terms of competitiveness, courses, professors, etc.)

The courses are not easy as they should not be, it challenges you and many professors’ main mission is to help students be successful. However there are courses here and there that I do not believe correspond with the academic learning of first year students and professors here and there who do not put in enough effort. The grading seems reasonable so far but the virtual learning has made it difficult to receive feedback on exams.

Describe the social life at your campus based on your own experiences (making friends, clubs + extracurriculars, party culture etc.)

Pretty simple. Similar faces in different classes are easy to be friends with, I have gained friendships and mentors by joining a student association.

What are some of the best and worst parts of your university experience so far?

Best: Grasping onto the lessons taught in class and being able to apply in everyday life or better comprehending the things I read and see.

Worst: Attending a mandatory course that taught very important workplace theories and behaviour and not being expected to apply it into unfamiliar situations due to the lack of real life experience we are not given as first year students.

List three effective study techniques and/or habits:

  1. Communicating and studying with classmates and friends

  2. Attending lectures

  3. Remembering that school does not define my life

List three pieces of advice for first-year students:

School is not the answer to everything nor does it open your doors, don’t be shy to get to know other students and join groups even if you are new. If you want to do something, you have to be the one to do it
