What did you wish you knew before going to your university? What made you choose this institution over all others? What are advantages and disadvantages of your institution or campus? List any advice for incoming first-year students about your university.
I chose UofG specifically for my program and the co-op option. I also wanted to leave home and the City of Guelph is relatively the same size as my hometown, which didn't make things very overwhelming. The great food on campus and abundance of opportunities are what helped me through first year. It is definitely important to put yourself out there, find an academic/ life balance and keep an open mind.
What did you wish you knew before choosing your specific program? What are the advantages and disadvantages of your program? List any advice for incoming first-year students about your program of study.
The program is very specific, but you do get real estate courses as of your first semester which is great! I didn't take many business courses in high school and so I didn't have a great idea of what to expect. What I found that helped me going into my first year was finding the course syllabus of previous years, finding the lecture topics and doing some research on these topics beforehand, just you aren';t going into a course completely blind.
What was your favourite university experience?
Getting involved on campus and attending events is really what helped me shape my university career and helped me achieve a school/ life balance. I was really involved in high school, and enjoyed it to the fullest, and so I knew that transcending that into my time at University would be important. Since then, I have gotten involved with my program and faculty's student associations as well as being an RA in residence. Through these involvements, I have made incredible memories and great connections. Don't be afraid to get involved!
What was your least favourite university experience?
Living independently as a first year can be daunting, and it is a period of adjustment. Having the ability to execute great time management is certainly an art, and managing stress can also be challenging, but once you find a groove or a routine, you're set!
What is the hardest part about your program and what were the steps that you took to overcome any difficulties?
It's a very small program (about 50 students). Become friends with some of the people in your real estate courses, it makes all the difference!!
If you were able to take electives, what was your favourite elective? If you were not able to take electives, what was your favourite course and why?
Introduction to design (EDRD 1400) is great; it’s very simple!
