Pharmaceutical Chemistry at Ontario Tech University

Tina (Year 2)

What did you wish you knew before going to your university? What made you choose this institution over all others? What are advantages and disadvantages of your institution or campus? List any advice for incoming first-year students about your university.

Time Management is really important and it can be underestimated and I really wish I knew more about how to manage my time wisely as I think you have time when in reality you don't. I choose the school based on proximity to my house. It is a smaller university where a student teacher relationship is easier to have and it's easier for them to help  you better.

What did you wish you knew before choosing your specific program? What are the advantages and disadvantages of your program?  List any advice for incoming first-year students about your program of study.

I wish I knew about how hard labs can be. I left some labs till the last minute and trust me it was really stressful. Again time management is really important, making a schedule really helps. The program has many career opportunities which is really good. Disadvantages would be that is easy to side tracked because you might think everything is easy and manageable

What was your favourite university experience?

The best experience would always be making friends and finding who you are as a person. Joining clubs was also great because there's where I got mostly involved in my interest and meeting people like me.

What was your least favourite university experience?

Worst experience hands down would be trying to understand a really hard concept or having the professor telling you that it's very simple

What is the hardest part about your program and what were the steps that you took to overcome any difficulties?

Hardest part would be the labs as sometimes I would elaborate too much or too little. I learnt that sticking with the manual is really good instead of trying to over do it and end up losing marks. So far I've had great group members so I can't really talk about that. For exams start studying a month in advance and do the topics you have a hard time grasping first. Make a study schedule, also do all the assigned homework because 9 out of 10 times the exam questions are similar.

If you were able to take electives, what was your favourite elective? If you were not able to take electives, what was your favourite course and why?

CHEM 1020U  was my favourite because of the professor honestly. The lectures are fun and interesting. They aren't long and boring and the slides are short.
