What did you wish you knew before going to your university? What made you choose this institution over all others? What are advantages and disadvantages of your institution or campus? List any advice for incoming first-year students about your university.

I chose Ryerson over other schools because my program (Media Production) was one of the best media programs in all of Canada. Our campus had a lot of social events despite being a commuter school, but because it was in the heart of downtown there were also many non-Ryerson students on campus.

List of advice:

  • Don't be afraid to speak to other students and try to find a group that fits! Your friends make your university experience all the better

  • Your professors are there to help you (they really are) don't be afraid to chat them up, talk to them, email them regarding your industry/ program/ coursework/ university life...etc.

  • Join program specific clubs to know your class better!

  • Do intramurals and sports to meet even more people!

What did you wish you knew before choosing your specific program? What are the advantages and disadvantages of your program? List any advice for incoming first-year students about your program of study.

RTA Media Production @ Ryerson:

Advantages:

  • Highly competitive program

  • You get to graduate with a concentration in whatever field of media you want to be in (business, audio, studio...etc)

Disadvantages:

  • Highly competitive....you'll have to stand out one way or another

  • Many students think they're very special

What was your favourite university experience?

My best experience was probably starting a podcast with some of my closest friends. It let me really explore my creativity and step outside my comfort zone with my friends there to support me, and vice versa.

What was your least favourite university experience?

My worst university experience was probably initially going into a program that I had no passion for AT ALL, and having to switch out to the program I graduated from.

What is the hardest part about your program and what were the steps that you took to overcome any difficulties?

The hardest part of my program was trying to stand out and make a name for myself. But I realized that I had no need to stand out, and did everything to the best of my own ability and made peace with that. With uncooperative group members, I would try my best to help them through their work and send them reminders - but ultimately I would just let them be.

If you were able to take electives, what was your favourite elective? If you were not able to take electives, what was your favourite course and why?

I actually loved all my courses! But I REALLY loved RTA927 (Business of Music) it was such a fun course that allowed me to explore all sorts of business within the music industry.
