Industrial Design at Emily Carr University of Art & Design

Lanna (Year 2)

What did you wish you knew before going to your university? What made you choose this institution over all others? What are advantages and disadvantages of your institution or campus? List any advice for incoming first-year students about your university.

I came to this university for the reason that it’s the best art school in Canada. When you’re applying for admission you don’t need to choose any program, anyone who got accepted would just simply get into a program called Foundation, where you will get the opportunities trying different things, and that helps you to decide which direction of art that you’re going for. It’s great for the people who love art but not sure which kind of art they’re the most interested in. So just enjoy trying all the new and interesting things, also enjoying making the friends who are in common and knowing different people!

I was just done my first year Foundation, not quite sure about what my second year Industrial Design major will be like. But what I know is Emily Carr is a place that provides you with resources or technical facilities that support you to liberally express your ideas. So be confident of your thoughts because every single one of them are precious, and try to express it through your art, then you will be satisfied with the result.

What was your favourite university experience?

No matter the campus resources or facilities, we got pretty much freedom to create whatever ideas that we think of. And it’s great to know a lot of friends who are of the same interest, and it’s awesome when you have an idea and someone who can immediately resonate with you without too much explanation. Since the size of our campus is smaller than the usual university, the number of students isn’t that high, this is what makes the distance between people closer!

What was your least favourite university experience?

The professors are awesome, but some of the ways that some instructors mark make no sense. So be aware of the instructors that you choose. You could get the information of faculty online and see the comments from other students.

What is the hardest part about your program and what were the steps that you took to overcome any difficulties?

The hardest part of Foundation year was also the most enjoyable part (for me). You get to do all different kinds of art at the same time, it’s quite challenging but still fun. It's important to manage your time. The other thing is also challenging is you need to read one article before the lectures every week to have a better understanding during lectures. But it’s also pleasurable to learn art history, feeling the changes of the world that are influenced by art.

If you were able to take electives, what was your favourite elective? If you were not able to take electives, what was your favourite course and why?

My favourite course in foundation year was interdisciplinary studio, this is a mandatory course for every foundation student. We got to hand on all kinds of things in class, so much fun! There’re only the things that you can’t think of!
