Hospitality and Tourism Management at Ryerson University

Janice (Year 2)

What did you wish you knew before going to your university? What made you choose this institution over all others? What are advantages and disadvantages of your institution or campus? List any advice for incoming first-year students about your university.

I chose Ryerson because it is in downtown Toronto (close to home) and it is one of the top hospitality and tourism programs in Ontario. The advantage is that there are a lot of opportunities in Toronto and it is close to where I live.

What did you wish you knew before choosing your specific program? What are the advantages and disadvantages of your program?  List any advice for incoming first-year students about your program of study.

I did a fair amount of research so there is really not much that I wish I knew before choosing the program. Even if you did not do as much research, everything is still pretty straightforward and easy to follow.

What was your favourite university experience?

My best experience is hanging out with friends that I met at Ryerson and meeting new people. It is convenient to hang out with friends in the Ryerson area because there are a lot of options. People that I meet at Ryerson are generally very nice and helpful.

What was your least favourite university experience?

I cannot really think of an absolutely terrible university experience. I would say the "worst" part is the process of completing assignments while there is a lot going on in other courses. It was really overwhelming for me to deal with exams, tests, assignments all at the same time.

What is the hardest part about your program and what were the steps that you took to overcome any difficulties?

The hardest part about my program is dealing with all the different stuff that is happening at the same time. It is very important to plan things ahead of time so you don't end up having to give up one course to focus on the other. It was extremely helpful for me to jot down the due dates so I know what is going on in the following weeks. There is also no shame to ask for help from friends and classmates.

If you were able to take electives, what was your favourite elective? If you were not able to take electives, what was your favourite course and why?

My favourite course is HTT 150 - Tourism Demand, Supply and Distribution. The lectures are all very fun and practical. All the assignments and exams are fair and straight forward. Our professor was extremely helpful, he even gave us a separate lecture and step-by-step guideline for the term paper.
