What made you choose this institution over all others? Did the university exceed your expectations?
Laurier's outstanding and reputable co-op program is what made me choose this institution over the others. The business program is well structured to help students transition to university. The Lazaridis Faculty and Lazaridis Student Society has exceeded my expectations coming in.
Do you have any lingering thoughts or regrets in your year as a whole (ex; application process, mistakes going into first year). If so, describe them.
I wish I applied to the double degree program from highschool as I learned that I enjoy quantitative courses like financial math.
Briefly describe the academic rigour of your program (in terms of competitiveness, courses, professors, etc.)
Many first-year courses in the business program are built to help students succeed. Many courses provide extra help sessions and bonus mark opportunities for students. Professors are easily accessible and always willing to talk with students.
Describe the social life at your campus based on your own experiences (making friends, clubs + extracurriculars, party culture etc.)
Clubs and extracurriculars are an amazing way to make friends. Residence also allows students to form friendships with others who may come from very diverse backgrounds.
What are some of the best and worst parts of your university experience so far?
Some of the first-year required business courses begin to get repetitive in the winter semester. The introductory business courses are also very vague and don't go in depth about a particular functional area. However, economic courses are very well-taught and provide an engaging learning experience.
List three effective study techniques and/or habits:
Know what environment you study best
Use a planner to space out your work
Have a definitive short-term and long-term goal
List three pieces of advice for first-year students:
Learning how to manage your time effectively is a must. Try to get in a rhythm within the first month of school and use a planner to break down larger projects and ease your stress. Also don't forget about the social aspect of university. Constant studying will eventually take its toll and lead to burnout.
